A Spanish public research organisation has developed hydrophilic acrylic systems of high refractive index and intrinsic bactericide activity that make them useful for the manufacture of flexible intraocular lenses. These systems can also act as UV filters. The lenses using this material are thinner with respect to commercial foldable intraocular lenses, enabling to reduce the incision for the lens insertion.
