Cutting-edge manufacturer Comesys Europe Limited is celebrating a $15m contract with a Chinese firm to fit its green engine technology into hundreds of eco-friendly buses.

The Cramlington-based firm has signed a deal with Yangzhou Yaxing Motor Coach Co. Ltd in Nanjing City to supply between 2,500 and 3,000 of its ‘Mini Hybrid TK’ systems over the next five years.

Comesys’ Mini Hybrid system uses unique electronic technology to improve the cooling system of bus engines, meaning vehicles use 10% less fuel and emit 10% less carbon dioxide, saving bus operators money and helping their environmental credentials.

The system has been under development for two years and has been successfully trialled in the North East. This demonstration project gathering data caught the attention of the Chinese manufacturer which makes around 5,000 buses and coaches every year.

Ryan Maughan, Director at Comesys, said: “We have agreed that an initial pilot system under construction will go out to China next month and on acceptance of its performance, we will deliver up to 3,000 systems over the next five years.

“The buses the systems will be fitted into are brand new and for a Canadian client and will be shipped to Canada to run in British Columbia from 2010.

“This is a new product area for us and is a very significant step forward for us.” One North East has helped support the project’s development with a £15,000 investment through its Low Carbon Transport Strategy to support the development of low carbon vehicle technology. 

Comesys was formed only four years ago at its Nelson Park West Industrial Estate base, with 13 staff currently employed there - anticipated to expand to 25 employees next year as the company grows.

Comesys design and manufacture advanced electronic control systems for all types of vehicles and industrial applications, such as accelerator pedals and hand controls for heavy duty vehicles, supplying major companies such as Volvo, MAN, DAF and Daimler.
